Gordon Williams

Gordon Williams, FRS, FREng, has throughout his career pursued research into the engineering properties of polymers with special reference to deformation and flow and with particular emphasis on fracture mechanics. He has published extensively in the areas of polymer fracture, fracture mechanics applied to composites and more recently on the deformation and fracture of soft materials including foods. He was Professor and Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department at Imperial College London before retirement where he is now a Senior Research Investigator. He was awarded the Griffith Medal by ESIS in 2014 for his seminal contributions to the application of fracture mechanics to polymers following the Griffith approach in terms of energy. He is ranked among "the most highly influential scientists and scholars worldwide" as judged by the ISI web of knowledge. He has been co-chair of ESIS TC4 since its formation in 1985.
